Ngai Tāmanuhiri Whānui Trust was first established to meet government requirements of those iwi entitled to receive fishing assets. Ngai Tāmanuhiri, like other iwi, had to show that it had a mandate to represent its people in managing fishing assets and it was required to set up a mandated iwi organisation (MIO) to receive assets.
